We love lip gloss, but it doesn’t always love us. It can seem sticky, act as a trap for our hair and after it slips, what feels like seconds of wear – this is probably the most frustrating thing of all. Making lip gloss last longer isn’t just about choosing the right product, it’s also about how you prepare and apply it. To get some tips, we got in touch with three of our favorite beauty influencers. Below you’ll find their best lip gloss tips.

Find the perfect formula

“Even though they can be a bit boring, stickier lip glosses last longer than greasy ones,” says Miranda Mendelson. Another option is to choose a glossy lipstick. “The color stays put, even if the glossy finish fades,” she adds.

Preparation with a lipstick

If you fill in your lips with a lip liner before applying lip gloss, the formula will stay put, says Julia Salvia. Mendelson likes to do this to “create the illusion of a long-lasting product, even if the gloss transfers and fades throughout the day.” Use a shade that matches the natural color of your lips, or change up the look with a dark red or bold pink.

Apply your gloss over a matte lipstick.

Another trick to make your gloss last longer is to apply it over a matte liquid lipstick, like Maybelline New York Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick. “This allows you to maintain your shine all day long,” says Madison Murrell. A plumping formula like L’OrĂ©al Paris Lip Gloss Pro Gloss is the perfect complement to a matte lipstick, making your lips look fuller and juicier.
